846 Berick Drive in St. Louis MO
As I started to write this blog, I instinctively turned towards the window in my office for inspiration and was reminded of how important windows are in our home environment.
In A Pattern Language, renowned architect Christopher Alexander shares the results of a study that was conducted that found that people feel the most comfortable in rooms that have windows on at least two different sides of the room and will choose these rooms over other rooms in the house. In recent years, many of us have become more aware of the quality of light in a home and are taking it into consideration when choosing a home.
The mid century ranch at 846 Berick Drive was built in 1949 by a builder who was at the cutting edge of design especially in University City. The Oakbrook Forest Subdivision broke from the two story brick homes that are prevalent in UCity. One of the features that makes the homes so attractive is the amount of natural light. At 846 Berick, six of the seven rooms of this mid century ranch have light pouring in from at least 2 sides. The living room/dining room area is open and has a wall of floor to ceiling windows at each end bringing in light from the east and the west.

The owner of 846 Berick Drive is a music teacher and has loved adding artistic touches to the landscaping and inside of the home. One of the things she added was the delightful screened porch off the family room. She has also created a large brick patio in the back yard and has a multitude of perennials that pop up in the front and back yards during the year. The owner loves both the porch and the brick patio as her havens after a hard day at school.
